Ben & Jerry’s Remixes Ice Cream for Social Justice

Summer may be nearly over, but ice cream and criminal justice reform cannot be restricted to one season. That’s why on Tuesday (September 3) Ben & Jerry’s partnered with the Advancement Project National Office to introduce a new flavor called Justice ReMix’d. The limited-edition pint was created “to spotlight structural racism in a broken criminal legal system,” according to an emailed statement.

Made with chocolate ice cream, cinnamon bun dough, and spicy fudge brownies, the new flavor was presented by B&J founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield in Washington, D.C. “Our approach to creating social change is to raise up the work nonprofits are doing on the ground,” Cohen said.

“That means ending a wealth-based pre-trial detention system that locks people up because they are poor, Black or Brown,” said Judith Browne Dianis, executive director of the Advancement Project. “It means dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline, divesting from criminalizing students, and investing in the creation of high-quality education and services. It’s time to re-imagine safety and justice.”

A portion of the proceeds from each pint will go to the Advancement Project’s Free and Safe campaign, which centers transformative, community-led solutions for ending the criminalization and mass incarceration of people of color.
