AZ Sen. Russell Pearce Smells Blood: Intends to Prey on US Citizen Children of Immigrants

By Seth Freed Wessler May 21, 2010

Russell Pearce, the Arizona state Senator who spearheaded SB 1070, the harshest anti-immigrant law in the country, is not stopping there. His next assault may be on the 14th Amendment and the citizenship rights of US citizen children of immigrants. In e-mails obtained by a local Phoenix news station, Pearce indicated that he will move to pass a bill that would deny citizenship to the children of undocumented immigrants who were born in the US. The law would be the first of its kind in the country, and would function, more or less, as a blood test for citizenship. KPHO news reports:

Pearce writes in one e-mail: "I also intend to push for an Arizona bill that would refuse to accept or issue a birth certificate that recognizes citizenship to those born to illegal aliens, unless one parent is a citizen." One of the more remarkable e-mails sent to a list of supporters detailed his next steps: The e-mail, several pages long, includes articles critical of the 14th Amendment, which gives babies born on U.S. soil automatic citizenship. One of the e-mails written by someone else but forwarded by Pearce reads: "If we are going to have an effect on the anchor baby racket, we need to target the mother. Call it sexist, but that’s the way nature made it. Men don’t drop anchor babies, illegal alien mothers do."

Few thought SB 1070 could actually become law. Now it has. Let it stop there.
