A 70-foot octopus float was escorted by an estimated 5,000 Occupy L.A. protesters down the 2012 Tournament of Roses Parade route. The 70-by-40-foot Occupy Octopus float was made out of recycled plastic bags and it took at least two dozen people to carry it down the parade route. "It’s an opportunity to get in front of a large group of people who, in most cases, should be sympathetic to our cause," William Garrels, who traveled to Southern California from Sacramento, told KABC News. "Why is it that the banks need a bailout and people aren’t (getting one)?" Jill Emery, told KABC News in Los Angeles, as she held a sign that read: "Nightmare on Wall Street – Rethink the American Dream." The 2011 Parade had an estimated total television reach of approximately 47 million viewers in the U.S. and 28 million viewers internationally, but it’s unclear how many of the telecasts included the Occupy float in their broadcast.
