Incarcerated Men Document Their ‘Hard Truth’ Via Film

By Sameer Rao Feb 22, 2019

Madeliene Sackler ("The Lottery") worked with 13 men incarcerated at the Pendleton Correctional Facility as they explored their decades-long sentences and the circumstances behind them via filmmaking. Now, the results of their work comes to HBO in the form of a new documentary, "It’s a Hard Truth Ain’t It."

rntThe incarcerated filmmakers, who share directing credits with Sackler, move behind and in front of the camera as they tell their stories with animation from Yoni Goodman ("Waltz With Bashir"). Several of the men also act in "O.G.," a drama starring Jeffrey Wright ("Westworld") that Sackler directed inside Pendleton.

“The input our partners—the men inside prison and on camera—had in directing and telling their stories is a collaborative model I hope to see replicated as often as possible," "Hard Truth" executive producer dream hampton ("Surviving R. Kelly") says in a statement

HBO will stream "It’s a Hard Truth Ain’t It" begining tomorrow night (February 23); it will air on the channel Monday (February 25), one day after the premier of "O.G." Watch trailers for both projects:
