Beyoncé Baby AbsurditIes

“I don’t think babies are absurd. But the media blitz around this baby is. This series highlights the more memorable news bites.” #trust

Cultural critic Touré says the song Jay-Z wrote for his daughter Blue Ivy is “one of the greatest love songs in hip-hop history.”

Here’s a bit from Touré for Times.com:

The new, poignant, melancholy love song by Jay-Z called “Glory” that reminds me a little of Stevie Wonder’s classic “Isn’t She Lovely?” They sound nothing alike but are emotional cousins as both are powered by a man’s heart bursting over a young child. Jay’s chorus: “The most amazin’ feeling I feel/ Words can’t describe the feeling, for real/ Maybe I paint the sky blue/ My greatest creation was you, you. Glory.”

Please trust me when I tell you that I genuinely enjoy Beyoncé and that I think that she’s an incredible performer. I also genuinely enjoy the song “Glory” and if the rumors are true that the sound of Ivy Blues heartbeat was sampled for the bass of the song, I think that is brilliant!

It’s a meaningful song, it’s deeply personal, yes. But come on now, hip-hop’s greatest love song?

Here’s more from Touré:

We have heard rappers rhyme about their love for their children before, but I can’t recall a hip-hop song about babies that’s as emotionally complex as “Glory.” It captures the exuberance of a new parent — Jay and Beyoncé’s daughter Blue was born two days before the song came out — but really “Glory” is a song about two pregnancies, one that was successful and one that was not. In the song, Jay’s joy about his new daughter sits alongside his lingering pain about a past miscarriage.
On a related note, Jezebel’s Dodai Stewart also says Jay-Z’s song is “actually groundbreaking” because it mentions Beyoncé’s miscarriage — something that almost never happens by male vocalist in any genre.

What say you? Listen to the song and vote for yourself in the poll below.
