NBC’s Vice President and late night TV host Jimmy Fallon have apologized to GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann for a prank pulled by the show’s band, The Roots. When Bachmann appeared on the program last week, the band played an instrumental for a song called “Lyin’ Ass Bitch” as she walked onto the stage. Although Bachman publicly accepted their apologies, she’s still upset about the incident.

“Of course I accept the apology but my guess is that it would have been the president of the NBC that would have been apologizing, not a senior vice president,” Bachmann told KLIF radio in Dallas on Friday, according to the HuffPost. Bachmann added that a similar stunt would not have been tolerated if it were directed at a woman like Michelle Obama.

Doug Vaughan, NBC’s vice president for late night programming, sent a personal letter to Michele Bachman, in which he said that the song played during her appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s show was “not only unfortunate but also unacceptable,” a spokeswoman for the GOP presidential candidate told the Associated Press. Vaughn also said the band had been “severely reprimanded.”

The song is question is a track off the the 1985 EP by the band Fishbone.

The Roots’ drummer, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, told the Wall Street Journal “the performance was a tongue-in-cheek and spur of the moment decision. The show was not aware of it and I feel bad if her feelings were hurt. That was not my intention.”

Questlove also went apologized on Twitter, the same place he announced to his fans that Bachmann would get a special tribute that evening. “Aight late night walkon song devotees: you love it when we snark: this next one takes the cake,” Questlove wrote on Twitter shortly before Bachmann took the stage.

As Spin points out, this isn’t the first time The Roots have used their song choices as commentary. Previously, they scored Ashlee Simpson’s appearance to a Milli Vanilli song and welcomed Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt with the song “Loser” by Beck.
