Three New Orleans police officers who were indicted yesterday on charges that they engaged in a cover-up of a 2005 shooting that happened days after Hurricane Katrina pleaded not guilty today.

The AP reports that Robert Gisevius, Kenneth Bowen and Anthony Villavaso appeared in federal court in New Orleans today to enter their pleas. The Justice Department has charged the officers in connection with September 5, 2005, shootings that left two men dead and four injured and that spawned what the feds are calling a massive coverup. Three other NOPD cops—Robert Faulcon and command officers Sgt. Arthur Kaufman and former Sgt. Gerard Dugue—were also charged yesterday with helping to orchestrate the multi-year cover-up.

The AP reports that U.S. Attorney Jim Letten has not decided whether to press for the death penalty against the officers who have been charged. Five other police officers have already been charged for their involvement in the incident that day, and all have pleaded guilty and resigned from the force.
